Bottle Gourd- Split Chickpea curry

Lentils, Pulses, Legumes play important role in Indian Cuisine. They are used to make curry, soups or salads. Now, that cooked lentils, vegetables, pulses are readily available in any grocery store this recipe can be made anyday but perfect for winter nights. If any one of you wondering from where can we buy Bottle Gourd?, it is available at any Asian/ Indian grocery stores. Bottle gourd is very healthy, you can incorporate them in any of your curries, soups, Dahl or even in stew recipes. I usually like to combine Bottle gourd with Potatoes, or lentils for curries. Shredded Bottle Gourd can be used for making Roti, Dumplings/ Fries ( Replace chopped Fenugreek with Shredded Bottle Gourd), or spicy lentil Cakes. Some of the recipes, I’ve shared in my earlier posts.

Apart from all the recipe ideas, Bottle Gourd juice is perfect remedy for healthy heart and weight loss. All you need to do is Blend the bottle gourd pieces into blender, pass it through the strainer. To enhance the taste you can add lemon juice, cumin powder, ginger and salt. But I remember, my uncle was drinking it as it is to keep heart healthy. Now, after sharing these benefits, I am excited to share this delicious recipe.

You will Need:

  • 3 Cups Bottle Gourd Cubes
  • 3/4 Cup Split Chickpeas/ Split Bengal Gram
  • 3 Tbs Oil
  • 2 Dried Red Chilies
  • 1 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 Tbs Finely Chopped Garlic
  • Pinch Of Asafoetida
  • 1 Chopped Tomato
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Coriander- Cumin Seed Powder
  • 2 Tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to Taste
  • 1/2 Cup Jaggery Powder
  • 1 Tbs Lemon Juice

Make It:

  • Method 1:
    1. In a bowl, measure and take Split Chickpea, Wash and soak them for about 2 to 3 hours.
    2. In a pressure cooker, add Oil and heat it up. Add Mustard seeds- let them crackle. Add Red Chillies, Asafoetida and garlic. Saute them for 30 seconds.
    3. Now, combine the bottle gourd cubes, Drained Split chickpea. Add them to pressure cooker with salt, 1 1/2 cup of water, tomatoes, chili powder, coriander cumin seed powder, turmeric powder and Jaggery.
    4. Mix everything well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
    5. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
    6. Mix everything and add lemon juice before serving.
  • Method 2:
    1. In a bowl, measure and take Split Chickpea, Wash and soak them for about 2 to 3 hours.
    2. Now, combine the bottle gourd cubes, Drained Split chickpea. Add them to pressure cooker with salt, 1 1/2 cup of water, tomatoes and turmeric powder.
    3. Mix everything well and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
    4. In a heavy bottom pan, add Oil and heat it up. Add Mustard seeds- let them crackle. Add Red Chillies, Asafoetida and garlic. Saute them for 30 seconds.
    5. Add cooked mixture to the pan and add rest of spices, chili powder, coriander cumin seed powder and Jaggery.
    6. Cook them for another minute or two.Switch off the flame, add lemon juice and serve hot with cooked rice or roti.
